How can I check that a plumber holds a valid RBQ licence?

Ask the contractor for their licence number, then look it up in the Régie du bâtiment du Québec licence holder register, available free online. You will see the licence status, the authorized categories and any restrictions. A valid licence must cover the exact plumbing work you are having done.

Where can I consult the official register?

The Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) maintains a public register of licence holders. You can search by licence number or company name, free of charge and without creating an account.

The register shows whether the licence is active, suspended or cancelled, the authorized categories and subcategories, and the issue date. It is the only authoritative source: a number printed on a truck or a business card proves nothing on its own.

Which number should I ask for?

The RBQ licence number has ten digits in three groups, for example 5853-1658-01. A licensed contractor provides it without hesitation and usually shows it on quotes and invoices.

Check that the name in the register matches exactly the name of the company invoicing you. A contractor who “borrows” someone else's licence is committing an offence, and you would bear the consequences.

    Does the licence category matter?

Yes. A licence is issued by category of work. A contractor can hold a valid licence without being authorized to perform plumbing or heating work. Make sure the subcategory actually covers the type of work planned.

For residential plumbing work, the licence must include plumbing systems. When in doubt, the register lists every subcategory. Our licence covers work such as bathroom renovation and water heater installation.

What are the risks with an unlicensed contractor?

The risk is not theoretical. Without a licence, no legal warranty protects you, the RBQ has no recourse to offer, and your insurer can refuse to compensate water damage caused by non-compliant work.

    • No bond if the work is abandoned or poorly done
    • Possible refusal of home insurance in the event of a claim
    • Non-compliant work to redo when selling the property
    • No practical recourse if the contractor disappears
    • Liability for an accident involving an uninsured worker

What else should I check before hiring a plumber?

Beyond the licence, insist on a detailed written quote, confirm that the company carries liability insurance and is in good standing with the CNESST, and read recent reviews from customers in your area.

A serious contractor welcomes these checks. Our RBQ licence is 5853-1658-01 and you can verify it yourself in the register before entrusting us with any work.
