What should I do about water damage before the plumber arrives?
Immediately close the main water supply, cut the power in the affected area if water is near outlets or appliances, move belongings out of reach, then mop up and photograph everything before cleaning. Call a plumber, then your insurer. These steps considerably limit the extent of the damage.
What comes first in the opening minutes?
The absolute priority is to stop the water. The main valve is usually in the basement, near the water service entry on the street side. Turn it fully clockwise.
If the leak comes from a single fixture - toilet, sink, water heater, dishwasher - a small local shut-off valve is often enough. Take five minutes today to locate those valves: hunting for them during a flood wastes precious time.
When should I cut the power?
As soon as water approaches an outlet, an electrical panel, an extension cord or a plugged-in appliance. Switch off the breaker for that circuit, or the main breaker if you have to cross a flooded area to reach it.
Never walk through standing water before the power is off. If the panel itself is wet or unreachable without stepping into water, go outside and call Hydro-Québec or the fire department.
How can I limit the damage while waiting?
Every minute counts: water migrates into floors, partitions and insulation, where it causes far more damage than what is visible on the surface.
- Move furniture, rugs, boxes and electronics out of the area
- Place buckets under active drips and a container under ceiling leaks
- Mop up or extract the water with a wet vacuum
- Open doors and windows, circulate air with fans
- Raise remaining furniture on blocks to protect the legs
What should I document for insurance?
Photograph and film before cleaning: the source of the leak, the extent of the water, each affected item and the damage to floors, walls and ceilings. Note the time you discovered the damage.
Keep damaged belongings until the adjuster's visit, along with every invoice related to the emergency, including the plumber and any drying equipment rental. Notify your insurer the same day: most policies require prompt reporting.
When is it an emergency call?
Call right away for a leak you cannot stop, a burst pipe, a sewer backup, water reaching electricity, or if you cannot close the main water supply.
Water contaminated by a sewer backup also requires fast professional intervention, both for the plumbing and for decontaminating the surfaces. A backwater valve prevents most of these sewer backups.
