An old, dense building stock and the problems it creates

Hull is the oldest sector of Gatineau. A large share of its buildings predate 1950, with many duplexes and triplexes built in rows, stacked apartments, and low basements where the piping runs exposed along the ceiling.

In practice that means cast iron drain stacks corroding from the inside, lead drains still buried under some floors, small-diameter copper supply lines that lose pressure when two fixtures run at once, and drain venting that was never redone as a single building was subdivided again and again.

The other reality of the sector is proximity: in a triplex, a leak on the third floor often shows up on the first. So we take the time to trace the source rather than repairing where the water appears.
